March 2011: Fast laser could revolutionize data communications.

Researchers at Chalmers have shown that a surface emitting laser – a cheaper and more energy-efficient type of laser for fiber optics than conventional lasers – can deliver error-free data at a record speed of 40 Gbit/s. The break-through could lead to faster Internet traffic, computers and mobile phones.

January 2011: Researchers demonstrate VCSELs grown on IQE material capable of maintaining high performance at elevated temperatures

A team of researchers from the Technical University of Berlin has published work in Applied Physics Journal demonstrating record data transmission rates from an oxide confined 980nm Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) operating at 85°C.
