Consortium as a whole

Each partner plays a different substantial and unique role. Each of the partners is also an internationally recognised leader in its own field as indicated by the ISI citation and h-indexof the scientists involved, and by leadership, market success and patents in case of the industrial partners.

The partners were stringently selected to meet the needs of the project, which are clearlydefined by the five work packages. WP 1 for Management, Reporting and Dissemination,WP 2-4 for the development of the three transmitters, and WP5 for Packaging, System-levelEvaluation, Standardization and Exploitation, each of which are central to the success of theproject. There is no duplication of tasks or expertise, but on the other hand sufficient mutualunderstanding, such that large synergy effects will arise.

Technische Universitaet Berlin, DE

TUB’s expertise is concentrated in growth, experimental and theoretical studies of electronic, optical and transport properties of semiconductor nanostructures and devices based thereupon. It has an outstanding expertise for self-organized growth of quantum dots, optical andelectronic characterization, culminating in device design, processing, characterization atultrahigh spectral bit rates [WP2] and IP protection, as it can be manifested by the extensiveamount of publications and patents issued. Numerous international research projects havebeen successfully conducted and managed. The TUB administration has provided legal, financial and administrative support for altogether several hundred projects funded by the EC. The TUB is therefore a natural choice for the role of Project Coordinator and leader indissemination of the results [WP1].

The Chancellor, Masters and Scholars of the University of Cambridge, UK

Cambridge University. UCAM has worked in the field of optoelectronics and photonic communications for more than 25 years. It has in-depth experience in high speed laser designand characterisation (WPs2-4) as well as 10 years of experience in datacommunications andshort haul photonics links (both digital and analogue) including participation in GbE, 10GbELRMand FiberChannel standards activities where it’s expertise in MMF communicationscontributed directly to the success of these standards (WP5). It has a strong history of IPprotection (2-5 patents per year filed) and exploitation / technology transfer.

Chalmers University of Technology, SE

Chalmers University of Technology has expertise covering every aspect of research and development of semiconductor lasers, including design, growth, fabrication and evaluation. Of most relevance for the project are the heavy efforts that have been devoted to thedevelopment of VCSELs and other communication lasers during the last several years [WP4].This has resulted in a number of key achievements with record performances for directlymodulated lasers in e.g. access networks, LANs, optical interconnects and radio-over-fibersystems. Chalmers is therefore in an excellent position for successfully completing tasksrelated primarily to direct modulation of VCSELs at very high speed.

Intel Performance Learning Solutions Limited, IE

Intel Ireland represents the world’s largest semiconductor chip maker, developing advanced integrated digital technology platforms for the computing and communications industries. Convergence of computing and communication drives Intel’s activities in the field ofinterconnects including optical interconnects (www.intelconnects.com) with a final goal ofBoard-to-Board and Chip-to-Chip optical connectors which are expected to come at thecomponent speeds >20-40 Gb/s in case economic optical transceiver solutions are available[WP5]. Intel will provide system specifications and analyze surrounding technologies likeCMOS integration of VCSELs and PINs and low power ultrahigh speed CMOS and SiGeHBT drivers.

A.F.Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute of RAS, RU

A.F.Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute and it’s Laboratory of the Physics of Semiconductor Heterostructures (Nobel Prize 2000) for more than 30 years have been inventing anddeveloping opto- and microelectronic components based on semiconductor heterostructures. Ioffe’s experts have extensive experience in design, fabrication and studies of noveloptoelectronic devices including Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSEL), laserswith deeply etched Distributed Bragg Reflectors, QD amplifiers, microdisc lasers, photoniccrystals and pioneered first GaAs-based 1.3 μm Quantum Dot VCSEL together with TUB. The group was the first to study Tilted Cavity Lasers and more recently Tilted Wave Lasersand to show their advantages. Thus, the team is the most experienced among the participantsin the field of experimental studies of these novel edge emitting devices based on leaky modeapproach. The team has been successfully involved in numerous Russian and internationalscientific projects. In this project Ioffe’s experience and facilities will be essential for thedevelopment of tilted wave laser (TWL) with integrated DBR electro-optical modulator. Ioffehas been appointed as a leader of corresponding workpackage. The team contribute withdevelopment of tilted wave laser, growth of corresponding epitaxial material as well asfabrication and characterization of the devices targeting LAN and access networks.

Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, IE

TNI. The Tyndall National Institute is Ireland’s largest research institute, currently comprising more than 400 staff, postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students.  The strengths of the institute at the present time lie in the areas of photonics, electronics, materials and nanotechnologies and their applications for information and communications, health, energy and other industries. In VISIT TNI will provide expertise in two different areas: fundamental investigations of the electronic structure of optoelectronic materials; and system validation of novel devices. Advanced materials and laser modelling programs will be provided, which have been successfully used to study steady-state and ultra fast carrier-carrier and carrier-photon gain and loss processes as well as investigations to optimise novel devices, including quantum dot lasers and optical amplifiers. TNI also possesses a state-of-the-art photonic systems research facility incorporating a comprehensive range of test and measurement equipment and optical system test-beds. TNI personnel also have proven expertise in the area of access networks particularly in the area of high speed, extended reach, passive optical networks (PON), gained also through the FP6 project PIEMAN.
